Ding Dong the Witch is Dead…

There are rumours that Judy Garland’s Ding Dong the Witch is Dead is set for a weekend number one. But, if it does top the charts, should the BBC play it? Social media groups have also formed to arrange parties for next Wednesday, such as Maggie’s good riddance party! and We’re having a party when Thatcher dies!

Margaret Thatcher, who died on my first day here at The Telegraph, may have been a divisive figure; the marmite of politics, but even if you despise someone, does that condone celebrating at their funeral? Having a party to show that you’re happy when – to some – a friend has been lost, to others a mother gone.

You may not agree with someone, you may hate someone for what you believe they did to the country, but this does not entitle you to destroy a funeral. Keep your protests private, we know how you feel, but maybe it’s time to think of how others feel. Let them have their send off.

And BBC, no, don’t play it. Have some taste.
