South of France Summer – 4

And week one is over, its guests gone. There was a brief cross over, a one nighter where old and new mingled. Well one new and three old. Though the five new friends for week two had arrived in France, it was only Annabel J who came up to Montauroux on the designated day. The others remained in Nice to watch – and one of them to compete in – the South of France’s Iron Man competition.

An Ironman is not, as I presumed it to be, a 10k run through obstacles. No, that’s a Tough Mudder, and compared to an Ironman, really isn’t that tough. An Ironman is  a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.2-mile (42.2 km) run. Give me a tough mudder any day of the week, compared to this bad boy. Why would you want to put your body through that? What’s more is that guest in question had to do it all in 30 degree heat. Mental.

He did it though, Tom H completed this brutal body blitz and is officially and Ironman. He limped in this afternoon to a round of applause, his feet peppered with swelling blisters, his toenails blackened from trainer trauma…but alive. We’re about to crack into some Champagne to celebrate.

Anyhow, the new guests are here: Tom C, Tom H, Annabel J, Simon L and Pete S. Here are some photos chronicling the last supper in Fayence with week one guests and the adventures that have arisen since with week two so far…

I must leave you now as I need to put some smack on and head out to supper to mark the true beginning of week two. More tales to come soon…
